Maplesville High School, Maplesville, Alabama

August 2011 - May 2013

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Taught general music for grades K-6 and instrumental music for grades 5-12, including concert band, beginning band, and marching band

  • Established foundations of reading music notations using cooperative peer teaching and emphasis on each student’s music literacy independent of rote instruction

  • Instructed technology education, arts survey, and music appreciation electives based on the curriculum provided by the Alabama State Department of Education

  • Assisted students in preparation for auditions for Honor Bands, Competitions, and College Scholarships

Accomplishments and Successes:

  • Began a fundraising effort, including several grant proposals, to raise money for band uniforms and instruments; purchased new uniforms for the band before director position was made part-time

  • Four students participated in various Honor Bands in the area, including Chilton County Honor Band and University of Montevallo Honor Band

  • Two students were offered band participation scholarships to four-year universities in Alabama

Director of Bands and Orchestra

Palm Harbor University High School, Palm Harbor, Florida

September 2008 - May 2010

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Taught instrumental music for grades 9-12, including two curricular concert bands, string orchestra, and several sections of class guitar

  • Maintained a marching ensemble in the fall of approximately 60 students

  • Instructed two concert bands: the Wind Ensemble and the Concert Band; the Wind Ensemble, made up of auditioned individuals primarily from grades 10-12 consisted of 22 to 40 members of the highest level of musical achievement in the program

  • Conducted the Symphonic Strings, a 20+ piece string orchestra consisting of a variety of performing ability from beginners to All-State quality musicians

  • Instructed two to three sections of beginning guitar; among the concepts emphasized were basic reading skills of music notation, tablature, and chord symbols; lessons also included basic theory skills, rock and jazz history, and music culture

  • Assisted students in preparation for auditions for Honor Bands, Competitions, and College Scholarships

Accomplishments and Successes:

  • PHUHS “Category Five” Marching Band achieved an overall EXCELLENT rating at Florida Bandmasters' Association District 9 Music Performance Assessments both years

  • PHUHS Symphonic Band earned an overall rating of EXCELLENT at Florida Bandmasters' Association District 9 Concert Band MPA during the 2008-2009 school year

  • PHUHS Symphonic Strings achieved an overall SUPERIOR rating at Florida Orchestra Association District 9 MPA in 2009 and STRAIGHT SUPERIORS in 2010, the only ensemble to do so in the district that year; PHUHS Symphonic Strings proceeded to State MPA for the first time in school history to earn all EXCELLENT ratings

  • Many students participated in local Honor Band opportunities, including the University of South Florida Marching Band Day event, Pinellas All-County Honor Band, and University of Florida Honor Band

  • One student violinist successfully auditioned for the Florida All-State Orchestra both years

  • Several students were offered band scholarship opportunities to two-year colleges and four-year universities in the states of Florida and Alabama

Director of Bands

Northridge High School, Tuscaloosa, Alabama​

August 2007 - May 2008

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Taught instrumental music for grades 9-12, including a marching component in the fall and a concert ensemble in the spring; concepts such as ability to read music notation and pitch discretion were emphasized

  • Maintained a class of beginning band students, three of which learned all twelve major scales and were major contributors to the Symphonic Band

  • Directed a jazz ensemble, where strong performance skills were stressed, including improvisation while learning all major scales, blues scales and all seven modes in every key; students were exposed to swing, bebop, Latin jazz, fusion, ballads, funk, and a variety of widely-known standards

  • Instructed a section of general music, which included units on music theory, music history, and music as it pertains to culture of the past and present

  • Assisted students in preparation for auditions for Honor Bands, Competitions, and College Scholarships

 

Accomplishments and Successes:

  • Took Concert Band to Concert Assessment despite a large, sudden drop in numbers due to director change from the director who started the program; students were encouraged to perform, and presented an honest performance with helpful comments from the judges for future assessments

  • One student successfully auditioned for Alabama All-State Band and four were selected for District 5 Honor Band

  • Several students participated in other Honor Band opportunities throughout the state, including the University of Alabama Honor Band, University of Montevallo Honor Band, and Auburn Honor Band
